About Dental Hygiene Matters
Dental Hygiene Matters began as a paid internship project with the San Antonio Math Include whose support and mentorship have been key to our growth. Sami’s encouragement and guidance continue to inspire us as we expand our impact. At Dental Hygiene Matters (DHM), our mission is to improve oral health equity by empowering youth to educate, engage, and support communities in need. Through free dental hygiene kits, interactive programs, and accessible resources, we aim to reduce dental poverty and make oral care a right—not a privilege.
DHM was founded by 2 passionate high schoolers who believe that small acts — like learning to brush properly or receiving a toothbrush — can create lasting impact. Their leadership drives our commitment to fostering healthier habits, brighter smiles, and confident futures for children and families everywhere. By partnering with dental clinics and local organizations, DHM reaches underserved populations that often lack access to basic dental care. Every toothbrush given, every lesson taught, and every smile restored brings us one step closer to a world where everyone, regardless of background, has the chance to thrive through better oral health.
In addition to distributing thousands of hygiene kits, DHM hosts educational programs such as Dental Fun Fest and events that blend fun with education—like oral health games that engage children in meaningful, memorable ways. We ensure that every family we reach feels seen, heard, and supported. Through social media campaigns and peer-led outreach, DHM is creating a youth-driven movement that normalizes good dental habits and breaks the stigma around poor oral health. As we continue to grow, our vision remains clear: to inspire a generation of changemakers who believe that everyone deserves the dignity of a healthy smile.
